2000 U-14 SEASON GAME SUMMARIES

Tuesday, June 20th
Somers 12, East Windsor 4. Somers opened with a win at home over East Windsor as Ashley Mazzoli pitched a complete game. Ashley Collins sparked the offense and Katrina Leno had a good game on defense.
South Windsor 17, Enfield 1. Christine Lemieux pitched a one-hitter against visiting Enfield. Melissa Beane starred on both offense and defense. Catcher Sparky Michaud had the lone hit for Enfield and also threw out three baserunners.
Vernon 10, Tolland 7. Beth Paterson held visiting Tolland to two runs over 4 2/3 innings and got support from the field as Olivia Dupuis made a nice running catch at shortstop and then doubled the runner off third base to end a rally. Michelle LaBoda and Cathy McCullough both reached base every at-bat. Larissa Jesanis, Kathy Shaw and Megan Gaedje.
Thursday, June 22nd
South Windsor 10, Somers 7. South Windsor won again at home as Danielle Cowee pitched the victory and got strong defensive support from Jenna White, Randi Casinghino and Melissa Beane. Ashley Martin, Sarabeth Thorne and Jessica Regan led Somers.
Vernon 29, Enfield 7. Vernon improved to 2-0 as Rachel Laster and Sherri Gandini each homered. Lisa Riendeau played very well on defense. Rene Tautic pitched well for Enfield. Amanda Hill had a good game at shortstop and catcher Dawn Ezold turned in a good effort behind the plate.
East Windsor 22, Tolland 9. Visiting East came from behind to even their record at 1-1. Julie Tetreault and Calla Stanley bothed pitched well and Kerry Stoecker went 3 for 4 at the plate. Allyson Pitney caught four infield fly balls and Kelly Donovan contributed a two-base hit. Megan Gaedje had 3 hits and Laura Filipek one for Tolland. Danielle Ostien pitched a good game, holding the visitors in check early on.
Tuesday, June 27th
All games postponed due to rain.
South Windsor at East Windsor rescheduled to Wednesday, June 28th.
Vernon at Somers rescheduled to Friday, June 30th (7:30PM).
Tolland at Enfield rescheduled to Wednesday, July 12th.
Wednesday, June 28th
South Windsor 12, East Windsor 11. (from 6/27) South hung on to win a close contest over East. Winning pitcher Danielle Cowee was aided by strong defensive support from Jen Wallace and Jenna White. Wallace also came through at the plate with a pair of hits. Julie Tetreault was dominant in pitching four innings of relief for East Windsor. Julie Lech had two hits and Kim Iskrzak sparked the defense.
Thursday, June 29th
Somers 17, Tolland 15. Somers overcame a sluggish defensive start and a 12-0 deficit to win at Tolland. Jen Brown came through with a clutch two-out 2-RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to give Somers its first lead. Sarah Hills struck out one and assisted on two groundouts in the final inning to earn the complete-game win, fanning 10 batters overall. Ashley Martin had a bases-loaded triple and Kristen Pomeroy tripled and singled twice to drive in four runs. Ursula Williams made a clutch catch in right field in the bottom of the 4th. Tolland jumped out to the early lead as Danielle Ostien homered in the first inning and tripled in the second. She also pitched four strong innings, allowing only six runs. Laura Filipek and Rachel Fain connected with back-to-back homers in the Tolland 4th inning. Catcher Megan Gaedje was excellant on the defensive side, throwing out several Somers baserunners.
South Windsor 14, Vernon 10. South Windsor also came from behind on the road to win a nip-and-tuck game against Vernon and become the last U-14 team without a loss. Christine Lemieux was the winning pitcher, striking out 11 batters in four innings of relief. Jen Wallace and Katie Zielinski both scored three runs and added two hits each for South Windsor. Colleen McCullough homered, Mary Gordon had 2 RBI and Suzanne Carlson sparkled on defense for Vernon.
East Windsor 18, Enfield 3. East made it a sweep by visiting teams Thursday night and evened its record at 2-2 with the win over Enfield. Ashley O'Brien was the winning pitcher, recording 11 strikeouts. Julie Tetreault and Julie Lech also played well for East. Cammy McComas, Ashley Michaud and Dawn Ezold had good games for Enfield.
Friday, June 30th
Somers 13, Vernon 11. (from 6/27) In a game under the lights, Somers defeated Vernon 13-11. For Somers, Jen Brown came through with another late-inning clutch RBI-single and Katie Skypek had four hits. Sarah Hills fanned 14 batters while Ashley Martin and Sarabeth Thorne combined for excellant defense behind the plate. Vernon's Kaylee Santuccio increased her batting average with three singles in 3 at-bats and Kellie Nelson had a triple and a single. Mary Gordon struck out 5 in relief and also hit a 2-run double.
Thursday, July 6th
Vernon 20, Tolland 14. Visiting Tolland beat Tolland 20-14 as Rebecca Mattern went 3 for 3 at the plate. Cathy McCullough reached base safely four times and Amanda Viens had a great game at catcher. Eileen Tanner belted two doubles for Tolland. Lindsey DuBosar and Mhairi-Kate McKeegan also had hits.
Somers 10, East Windsor 8 (8 innings). In a great game at East Windsor High School, Somers took advantage of some late walks and passed balls to post a come-from-behind victory in extra innings. Somers was sparked by two defensive gems at second base by Katrina Leno, who also knocked in two runs in the 8th and decisive inning. Sarah Hills went the distance for the winners, striking out 13 and walking four. Katie Skypek turned in a solid defensive effort behind the plate. Julie Tetreault took the loss for East Windsor, fanning 11 batters in 7 2/3 innings. She also helped her cause with two hits on offense. Erin Stoecker hit a 3-run blast in the third inning and Stephanie Maura also hit well, complimenting a stingy East Windsor defense.
South Windsor 19, Enfield 4. For the second consecutive Thursday, road teams swept the slate as South downed Enfield 19-4. Amanda Karagianis was the winning pitcher and also led the offense with three hits. Melissa Beane scored three runs and Katie Thorpe had 2 hits and 3 runs scored. Enfield featured steady play from Kate Dumoulin, Amanda Hill and Michelle Segal.
Friday, July 7th
Somers 16, Enfield 0. Somers blanked visiting Enfield in the first game of a U-14/U-16 doubleheader. Ursula Williams, Ashley Collins and Lindsey Cunningham combined for seven of Somers' runs and led a strong defensive effort. Dawn Ezold pitched well for Enfield and was supported defensively by Kate Dumoulin and Kristen Montville.
East Windsor 11, Vernon 10. Julie Tetreault and Calla Stanley combined to pitch East past Vernon in a close game. Julie Lech had an outstanding offensive game and drove in the deciding run. Jennifer Whitehead played well in the field, making a great catch behind first base. Tracy Seigle had two RBI for Vernon and Colleen McCullough had a good game on defense. Mary Gordon pitched well in the loss.
South Windsor 8, Tolland 3. South notched its sixth win without a loss and completed a sweep of the night's games by home teams. Danielle Cowee was the winning pitcher and Katie Zielinski supplied the offense.
Tuesday, July 11th
Somers 17, Vernon 11. Visiting Somers outlasted Vernon 17-11 in a game featuring many extra-base hits. Katrina Leno led the Somers barrage with three doubles and a single and Ashley Martin tripled and singled twice. Jen Brown and Ashley Collins hit doubles and Melissa Vamvilis connected for four singles. Sarah Hills pitched the complete game, yielding 10 hits, walking eight and striking out 14 batters. Sherri Gandini belted a 2-run homer for Vernon and Rebecca Mattern doubled and singled. Danielle LaMountain tripled, Rachel Laster and Lisa Riendeau both hit doubles and Lisa Dockendorff added two singles. Pitchers Mary Gordon and Beth Paterson combined to walk nine and strike out nine. Kaylee Santuccio had a good game on defense.
Tolland 27, Enfield 3. Tolland trounced Enfield in a game halted after 4 1/2 innings. Samantha Morrow crushed a grand slam homerun and Rachel Fain went 3 for 4 with a triple to lead the offense. Megan Gaedje also had three hits. Danielle Ostien and Lindsey DuBosar combined to pitch the win. For Enfield Rene Tautic, Danielle Dwyer and Kate Dumoulin turned in good efforts.
East Windsor at South Windsor. Rescheduled to Sunday, July 30th (5:30PM).
Wednesday, July 12th
Tolland 32, Enfield 13. (from 6/27) In a make-up game, Lindsey DuBosar and Missy Pivonka both had three hits and split the pitching duties as Tolland beat Enfield for the second straight night. Samantha Morrow also continued to hit well, collecting three singles. Cammy McComas pitched well for Enfield while Rene Tautic and Shannon Perkins had good games overall.
Thursday, July 13th
Vernon 16, Enfield 1. Lisa Dockendorff pitched visiting Vernon past Enfield. Suzanne Carlson and Rebecca Mattern also played well for the winners. Enfield received solid performances from Amanda Farnan, Danielle Dwyer and Michelle Segal.
South Windsor 15, Tolland 9. In a game originally scheduled for August 1st, Christine Lemieux and Danielle Cowee combined to pitch South to its seventh win. Liz Lassman had a 3-RBI night and Amanda Karagianis, Melissa Beane and Jenna White carried the defense. Danielle Ostien led Tolland's hitters with three safeties and Megan Gaedje went 2 for 3. Larissa Jesanis starred on defense for the visitors.

Friday, July 14th
Somers 7, South Windsor 6. In a great game under the lights that ended with the two teams tied for first place, Somers and Mother Nature handed South their first loss of the season by a score of 7-6 in 6 innings. South Windsor held a one-run edge going into the last of the sixth inning but Brianne Nyquist knocked in two runs to give Somers the lead. South came back in the seventh to tie the game on Danielle Spiro's clutch 2-out RBI double. As South took the field for the home half of the 7th inning, heavy rains cancelled the remainder of the game. By rule, the score reverted back to the last completed inning, giving Somers the win. Sarah Hills pitched a complete game for Somers, giving up 4 hits, walking 6 and striking out 11. Sarabeth Thorne led the defense at shortstop, coming up with several big plays. Melissa Vamvilis and Jen Craig had good games at the plate for the winners. For South Windsor, Amanda Karagianis pitched 5 2/3 innings and was relieved by Danielle Cowee. They combined to yield 6 hits, walking 7 and strking out four. Overall, South played great team defense in support of their pitchers. Karagianis also helped her cause by scoring two runs and Jenna White singled and scored.
Tuesday, July 18th
East Windsor 16, Enfield 7. East won at home, defeating Enfield 16-7. Ashley O'Brien was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts. Julie Lech led the offense, going 3 for 4 at the plate. Catcher Kerry Stoecker had a great game behind the plate and retired one batter with a nice catch of a foul ball. Enfield's defensive stars were Rene Tautic, Dawn Ezold and Danielle Dwyer, who made a nice catch at second base.
Somers 26, Tolland 1. Somers downed visiting Tolland in a game shortened to 4 1/2 innings. Somers' Ashley Mazzoli, Ashley Collins and Kristen Pomeroy had the hot bats. Sarah Hills had a good night in the circle, striking out 12 of 21 batters faced, walking five and giving up no hits. For Tolland, Larissa Jesanis made several good defensive plays as did Laura Konikowski, who did a nice job behind the plate. Danielle Ostien used some heads-up baserunning to score the lone run.
South Windsor 12, Vernon 3. South remained tied for first place with Somers by defeating Vernon in a game that was close until the 6th inning. Danielle Cowee was the winning pitcher and was assisted by Amanda Boileau, who pitched three strong innings of relief, and Melissa "Sparky" Beane, who played another fine game behind the plate. Defensive standouts for Vernon were Julie Morris, Kellie Nelson and Colleen McCullough.
Thursday, July 20th
Vernon 16, East Windsor 9. Vernon evened its record as Colleen McCullough homered and Rachel Laster had 3 hits including a triple. Olivia Dupuis had 2 hits and a walk and had a good game behind the plate as well as an emergency catcher. Ashley O'Brien led East, going 3 for 3, and Kara Iskrzak had two hits. Stephanie Maura had an unassisted double play to highlight the defense.
Somers 22, Enfield 1. Visiting Somers defeated Enfield in a five inning game. Lindsey Cunningham, Melissa Vamvilis and Jen Brown had strong performances for Somers. Sarah Hills pitched a 2-hitter, walking two and striking out twelve. Enfield got their hits from Alyssa Cannella and Amanda Michaud, who also gave a solid effort behind the plate. Katie Dumoulin and Kim Collins came up with several fine defensive plays.
South Windsor 28, Tolland 2. South won on the road and kept pace with Somers as Amanda Karagianis and Danielle Cowee teamed to toss a 3-hitter. Danielle Spiro led the winners with three hits. Eileen Tanner, Laura Konikowski and Missy Pivonka were defensive standouts for Tolland.
Friday, July 21st
Somers 5, Vernon 3. In the first game of a U-14/U-16 doubleheader at Somers, Sarah Hills led an excellant defensive effort by Somers, striking out eleven batters while giving up five hits and five walks. Crista Maggio had a clutch RBI single in the 2nd inning and Jen Brown had a big RBI hit in the 4th inning. Sarabeth Thorne and Katrina Leno came up strong on the defensive side for the winners. For Vernon, Rachel Laster doubled and Lisa Dockendorff and Lisa Riendeau had singles. Leighann Caron and Michelle LaBoda used some smart baserunning to score two of Vernon's runs.
Tolland 11, Enfield 1. Stacy Royce went the distance for Tolland, giving up one run. Megan Gaedje, Mhairi-Kate McKeegan, Danielle Ostien and Crystal Hurley had the hot bats, all going 2 for 3 at the plate. Kim Collins took the loss for Enfield, also pitching a complete game. Cammy McComas had a good game defensively at second base and Alyssa Cannella hit well.
South Windsor at East Windsor. Rescheduled to Wednesday, July 26th.
Tuesday, July 25th
South Windsor 13, Somers 9. In a game in which the weather played havoc with all pitchers, South Windsor gained a narrow victory at home over Somers that ended the visitors' 9-game winning streak and edged them out of first place. It took three South pitchers to match strikes with Sarah Hills of Somers, with Amanda Karagianis ultimately proving up to the task, pitching a flawless final two innings. Amanda Boileau and Rachel Hamilton carried South's offense while Melissa Beane and Danielle Spiro played solidly on defense. For Somers, in addition to Hills, Lindsey Cunningham, Jen Brown and Kristen Pomeroy starred.
Vernon 40, Enfield 10. Vernon exploded for forty runs and evened their record at 6-6. Kellie Nelson went 4 for 4 with a homerun and Sherri Gandini homered twice and tripled to lead the barrage. Michelle LaBoda also hit a 4-bagger for the winners. Cathy McCullough and Julie Morris played well in the field. Alyssa Cannella tripled for Enfield and had a good defensive game at first base. Amanda Farnan and Dawn Ezold played well at catcher and shortstop respectively.
Tolland 23, East Windsor 15. Tolland beat East to complete a sweep of the night's games by home teams. Danielle Ostien pitched a complete game and helped her own cause by going 2 for 3 at the plate. Megan Gaedje had a good game behind the plate and at the plate, going 1 for 2. Laura Filipek also went 1 for 2 and made some key defensive plays. East Windsor's offense featured triples by Julie Tetreault and Julie Lech and a double by Erin Stoecker.
Wednesday, July 26th
South Windsor at East Windsor. (from 7/21) Rained out - rescheduled to Wednesday, August 2nd.
Friday, July 28th
Somers 9, East Windsor 2. In a game that was much closer than the score indicated, Somers defeated East Windsor in a defensive battle under the lights. Homestanding Somers took advantage of some walks, a double by Beth Palmer and some alert baserunning to stake an early lead. Lindsey Cunningham helped the cause by scoring twice and Katie Skypek and Beth Palmer led a strong defensive effort behind the plate. East Windsor's infield defense was superb, with Ashley O'Brien, Julie Lech (Happy Birthday, Julie !!) and Stephanie Maura turning a double play in the fourth inning. Kim Iskrzak used a walk and some great baserunning to score a run for East. Calla Stanley singled and scored and Erin Stoecker also singled. In the pitching department, Julie Tetreault and Ashley O'Brien combined to strike out nine batters, giving up three hits and walking ten. For Somers, Sarah Hills fanned a season-high 17 while walking eight and yielding just two hits.
Sunday, July 30th
East Windsor at South Windsor. (from 7/11) Postponed due to rain. Will not be rescheduled because of time restraints.
Monday, July 31st
South Windsor 17, Enfield 1. (from 7/27) Danielle Cowee pitched another fine game as South downed Enfield. Jenna White had three hits and Jen Wallace played well at catcher. Cammie McComas pitched well in the loss for Enfield. Amanda Hill and Danielle Dwyer had good games in the field.
Tolland at East Windsor. (from 7/13) Postponed due to rain. Rescheduled to Friday, August 4th.
Tuesday, August 1st
East Windsor 14, Vernon 0. Julie Tetreault pitched a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts as East blanked Vernon. East Windsor received four RBI from Lisa Giroux and took advantage of alert baserunning by Allyson Pitney. Mary Gordon pitched well for Vernon. Shannon Miller and Danielle LaMountain had good games defensively.
Somers 13, Enfield 5. Somers won at home over Enfield as Ashley Collins, Jen Brown and Katie Skypek each had two hits. Enfield's Kim Collins pitched well in the loss. Danielle Dwyer doubled and Jackie Dwyer played well in the field.
Tolland at South Windsor. Played on July 13th.
Wednesday, August 2nd
East Windsor 9, South Windsor 3. (from 7/26) Julie Lech went 3 for 3 as East defeated South. Ashley O'Brien pitched a great game and also played well defensively, as did Kerry Stoecker. Erin Stoecker added a double. Amanda Karagianis pitched well but took the loss for South Windsor. Randi Casinghino and Jen Wallace had good games in the field.
Tolland 31, Vernon 10. (from 7/27) Tolland put all the pieces together and won their third straight game at Vernon. Kathy Shaw (4 for 4) and Rachel Fain (2 for 4) each drove in six runs. Alyson Gromak (3 for 4, 3 RBI) and Megan Gaedje (4 RBI) were also generous contributors. Danielle Ostien pitched well in relief, yielding two runs, and went 1 for 3 with 3 RBI at the plate. Overall, the entire team played solid defense. Kaylee Santuccio led Vernon with a triple. Rebecca Mattern and Lisa Riendeau both made nice catches in the outfield.
Thursday, August 3rd
Somers 25, Tolland 3. In their final regular season game, Somers defeated Tolland 25-3 in six innings. Somers got some outstanding defense in the field from Ashley Collins, who made two consecutive tough foul ball catches at third base, and Ursula Williams, who made a nice catch in right field for a big out in the 5th inning. Ashley Collins also had a good night at the plate, reaching base and scoring on all four of her at-bats. Jen Brown, Kristen Pomeroy and Melissa Vamvilis also provided scoring punch at the plate. On the mound, Sarah Hills struck out 11 batters, walked three and gave up four hits. For Tolland, Danielle Ostien led the way, clocking a solo homerun in the center/right field gap in the second inning. Laura Konikowski doubled in the second as well and was followed by Lindsay DuBosar's RBI single. Alyson Gromak also singled for Tolland and Rachel Fain played well in the field. Megan Gaedje contributed her usual solid effort at catcher.
East Windsor 21, Enfield 4. Calla Stanley pitched East Windsor to their third straight win at Enfield. Jen Whitehead led the defense and Erin Stoecker hit a double. Ashley Michaud, Katie Dumoulin and Shannon Perkins played well for Enfield.
South Windsor 18, Vernon 8. South Windsor broke open a close game in the fifth inning at Vernon, completing a sweep of the night's contest by visiting teams. Christine Lemieux and Danielle Cowee split the pitching duties and Randi Casinghino led South's offense with three hits. Eve Belardinelli played well on defense. Rachel Laster and Julie Morris were the hitting stars for Vernon and Tracy Seigle had a good game in the field.
Friday, August 4th
East Windsor 17, Tolland 1. (from 7/31) East Windsor and Tolland concluded the U-14 regular season as East headed into the tournament with a four game win streak. Julie Tetreault earned the win, striking out nine. She also had a 3 for 3 night at the plate. Kerry Stoecker also went 3 for 3 and drove in five runs. Shortstop Julie Lech anchored the defense. Lindsey DuBosar and Alyson Gromak had hits for Tolland and Megan Gaedje skillfully bunted her way on base. Pitcher Stacy Royce made the defensive play of the game, snagging a high pop foul ball after a long run.
