East Hartford 4, Enfield 3. The East Hartford Banshees edged the Enfield Fireballs 4-3 in a well played and intense tournament final. East Hartford starter Lisa Donato yielded a run to Enfield in the first inning on doubles by Lindsey Deford and Courtney Cannella. After a walk to Britni Siana, Donato retired the next three batters to avoid further damage. East Hartford answered in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out triple to right field by Lynne Foran, who later scored on Lisa Donato's RBI-groundout. Enfield hitters were retired in order in the second inning and East Hartford stranded Jenna Allison, who doubled, at third base as the score remained tied 1-1.
The Fireballs failed to score in the top of the third inning, thwarted by a fine defensive play at first base by Ashley Appel to retire Lindsey Deford. In the home half of the third, Brittany Brashier reached base on a one-out infield single, stole second base and advanced to third on Heather Trinks' bunt. After a walk to Joycelyn Gionfriddo, Sara D'Attilio laced a bases-clearing double to the left centerfield gap to put East Hartford ahead 3-1.
Enfield was again denied in the fourth inning by two great plays by Lynne Foran at third base and centerfielder Sara D'Attilio's running catch of Natalie Kyparidis' line drive. The Banshees then scored their final run on a double by Abby Rodriguez, a bunt by Amy Quattropani and a single by Ashley Appel.
Enfield managed a run in the fifth inning on a single, a hit batter, a walk and an RBI-groundout by Tori Benoit. Abby Rodriguez' throw to catcher Amy Quattropani after fielding a hit by Katie Krogmann retired Ashley Poggie at the plate to keep the score 4-2. East Hartford opened their half of the fifth inning with a single by Katie Coiteux but the next three batters were retired by Courtney Cannella on two strikeouts and a fly ball.
Enfield got a two-out single in the sixth by Lindsey Deford, who then advanced to third base on a steal and a passed ball, but was unable to plate the run. East Hartford threatened in the bottom of the inning but a leaping catch at second base by Deford robbed Abby Rodriguez of a certain RBI.
The Fireballs mounted a rally in the seventh inning with a one-out single by Natalie Kyparidis, who stole second and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Amanda Meunier then walked and stole second to put the tieing run in scoring position with one out. Ashley Poggie's line drive to right center was caught by Marchary Davis but Kyparadis tagged up and scored to make the score 4-3. Donato then induced the next batter to pop up to Amy Quattropani to give East Hartford the victory.
Regular season West Division champs East Hartford, coached by Tony Foran and Amanda Ward, played an excellant overall tournament that was extended two extra days due to inclement weather on Sunday. Seventh seed Enfield, coached by Joe Cannella and Lance Miles, played with grit and determination the entire weekend and rewarded the many spectators in attendance with an exciting tournament final.
