2002 U-16 SEASON GAME SUMMARIES

Monday, June 24th
West Hartford 4, Stafford 1. (see photos)West Hartford defeated visiting Stafford 4-1 in a close opening game to the U-16 season. Heather Corrigan struck out five to get the win. Catcher Michele Ribeiro defused three Stafford scoring threats by throwing out baserunners. Maya Shoham hit a double to head the offense. Tori Butler (2 for 3) and Britney Church (double) had good games at the plate for Stafford. Stephanie Freeland played well defensively.
Wednesday, June 26th
Stafford 11, Bloomfield 3. Stafford evened their record with an 11-3 win over visiting Bloomfield. Marcie Boldi earned the victory, striking out 13 batters. Michelle Syphers drove in a pair of runs and Corinna Boldi also did well at the plate. Catcher Stacey Beebe had a great game defensively. Julie Melanson pitched a good game for Bloomfield and Genesis Hart led the defensive efforts.
Windsor 9, Ellington 7. Windsor opened with a win at Ellington as Natalie McCollin belted a grandslam homerun in the first inning. She also combined with Elizabeth Edwards and Mallory Mitchell in striking out 14 Ellington hitters. Amanda Ziaks also had a good game for Windsor. Ellington's Ashley Gioia pitched well in taking the loss and helped herself with a 3-run homer in the first inning.
Bolton 16, South Windsor 9. Bolton defeated host South Windsor 16-9. Samantha Morris earned the win, striking out eight and walking three. Molly Murphy scored 4 runs on two hits and three walks. Jenna Anderson went 3 for 4 with two doubles. Jenna Girard was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate for South. Kathy Marulanda and Stephanie Maura collected three hits apiece.
West Hartford 2, Vernon 0. West Hartford won again at home in a game dominated by pitching and defense on both sides. Abby Johnson shut down Vernon's offense with a no-hitter, striking out eight. Catcher Michele Ribeiro called a great game, utilizing Johnson's change-up effectively to freeze batters. Ribeiro also picked off Vernon's only scoring threat, a walk that managed to reach third base. Vernon's two pitchers combined to strike out eight and allow only two hits but six walks and a couple of passed balls enabled West Hartford to score the pair of runs.

Friday, June 28th
Somers 11, Bloomfield 2. The Titans took advantage of 10 walks to win their season opener on the road in Bloomfield, 11-2, in a weather shortened six inning game. Crista Maggio and Lindsey Cunningham each scored three times and Lisa Muscarella singled and had an RBI in her first game with the Titans. Tiffany Doane was solid behind the plate. In the pitcher's circle, Sarah Hills gave up two hits, walked two and struck out seven. For Bloomfield, Sarah Federico also did a great job behind the plate and Jay Hart made several excellant plays on defense. Bloomfield's pitcher also struck out seven batters.
Stafford 2, Hebron 1. Stafford came out on top in a close game with Hebron as Marcie Boldi pitched the summer's second no-hitter. Britney Church hit a double and Stacey Beebe knocked in the deciding run. Jill Mangan pitched very well for Hebron but took the loss. Brittany Christensen scored the lone run and Stephanie Houghton had a good night defensively at third base.
Vernon 4, Tolland 4 (susp. after 6 innings).
Windsor at Bolton. Rescheduled to Friday, August 2nd as Bolton at Windsor (6:30PM).

Monday, July 1st
Ellington 7, Vernon 6 (8 innings). (see photos)Ellington came from behind to tie the game in the 7th and then won in the 8th inning at Vernon behind the determined pitching of Ashley Gioia and a gritty defense that made the plays when they needed to. Ashley O'Brien had a pair of hits and catcher Kerry Stoecker knocked in the deciding run. Samantha Plachy had a good game in the field. Kellie Nelson pitched very well for Vernon but took the loss. Melissa Rebai (3 hits) and Rebecca Mattern (2 hits) led the hitters. Erin Diette turned in her usual steady performance behind the plate.
South Windsor 4, Windsor 2. South Windsor crossed the river and returned with a win, 4-2 over Windsor at Welsh Park. Danielle Cowee and Danielle Usiadek combined to pitch a two-hitter, walking only two. Jen Wallace played flawless defense at second base. Stephanie Maura went 2 for 3 at the plate, including a double. Natalie McCollin, Meaghan Maloney and Jackie Mendola played well for Windsor.
West Hartford 4, Bolton 2. West Hartford beat the Classics 4-2 in another game dominated by pitching and defense. Kelly Mascolo struck out seven in 4 innings and Abby Johnson had 3 Ks in 3 innings. Marissa Boccaccio (SS), Theo Dworak (3B) and catcher Michele Ribeiro, who pick off her third runner in three games, led the defense. Theo Dworak also did well at the plate with a single, double and run scored. Liz Ross had a hit and scored two runs and Michele Ribeiro had a single and an RBI. Pitcher Samantha Morris fanned 10 for Bolton but took the loss. Colleen Murphy had a hit and scored a run and Tegan Mahford also singled and scored.
Simsbury 8, Tolland 3. Jess Savino struck out 14 to lead Simsbury to an opening game win over Tolland. Savino also singled, doubled and stole four bases in the victory. Kristina Gordon and Sheila Capetta sparked Simsbury rallies with two hits apiece. Diane Rumbold drove in two runs and caught a strong game behind the plate. Amy Neureither had an RBI and also played well defensively. For Tolland, Rachel Fain had a single, double and RBI. Samantha Morrow drove in a run with a well-hit triple and also made some good defensive plays in the infield. Lindsey DuBosar pitched seven good innings for Tolland, striking out five.
Stafford 7, Somers 0. Stafford won on the road, quieting the Somers offense 7-0. Jessi Zeigler doubled and Tara Butler drove in a pair of runs. Victoria Butler made some key defensive plays at third base to preserve the shutout. Ashley Mazzoli had two hits for Somers and Lindsey Cunningham added one. Nancy Gilbert had a good game in the field.
Hebron 4, Bloomfield 1. Hebron won its home opener, 4-1 over Bloomfield. Jill Mangan and Danielle Dupont combined to allow just three hits. Kara Pinto went 2 for 3 to spark the Express offense. Steph Smith had a great defensive game at third base and Stephanie Brown played well in the outfield. Sarah Federico pitched a good game for Bloomfield and had a hit at the plate as well. Catcher Jessica Swetcky also had a hit to go along with two pick-off plays.
Monday, July 8th
Bolton 15, Tolland 14. The Classics rallied from an 11-1 deficit, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to win. After two Bolton pitchers gave up eleven runs in the 2nd inning, Samantha Morris returned in the 3rd and pitched five innings of 2-hit ball, striking out twelve batters. Sarah Haight hit a clutch triple and scored the tieing run in the 7th inning. Becky Kinney was 2 for 4 with a double. Tolland's offensive leaders were Rachel Fain, Missy Pivonka and Lindsay Rankin.
Simsbury 2, Stafford 1. Jessica Savino pitched a 2-hitter, striking out 16, as Simsbury won at Stafford. Amy Neureither's bunt single in the 7th drove in the tieing run. Sheila Capetta had the game-winning RBI and also played well on defense at first base. Stafford's Marcie Boldi fanned 11 and yielded only three hits. Stephanie Freeland caught a good game, throwing out a baserunner. Amanda Syme was a defensive leader at shortstop and also drove in Stafford's run with a double.
Ellington 6, South Windsor 5 (8 innings). Ellington bested host South Windsor 6-5 in 8 innings. Erin Stoecker's homerun to lead off the game and Samantha Blanchard's triple were decisive hits. Pitcher Mallory Householder came up from U-14 to start the game and did very well. Ashley O'Brien was also very effective in relief. Nicole Nixon pitched a good game for South. Steph Maura homered and Sarah Archambeault led a strong defense.
West Hartford 9, Hebron 3. West Hartford improved to 4-0, winning at Hebron 9-3. Kelly Mascolo (3 IP/4K) and Abby Johnson (4 IP/3K) combined for the win. Kelly McCormick and Julie Monahan each had a hit and two runs scored. Abby Johnson went 2 for 2 and scored a run. Maya Shoham had an outfield assist and a putout. Catcher Michele Ribeiro picked off another baserunner and had a putout. Melissa Newman played well defensively in right field and had two putouts. Jill Mangan pitched well for the Express, striking out eight in the loss, and also scored one of Hebron's runs. Kate Wiley had two hits and scored a run. Brittany Christensen had a hit and a run scored.
Somers 9, Vernon 7.

Wednesday, July 10th
West Hartford 14, Somers 0. West Hartford won their fifth straight as Abby Johnson pitched her second no-hitter of the summer, 14-0 over Somers. Johnson struck out six and walked three. Maya Shoham (2 for 2, 2 runs), Alix Raymond (3 for 3, 1 run) and Michele Ribeiro (1 for 2, 3 runs) accounted for much of West's offense. Shortstop Marissa Boccaccio had a good game in the field. Sarah Hills took the loss for the Titans, striking out five.
Tolland 5, South Windsor 4. (see photos)Tolland's defense stifled South's 7th inning rally, leaving two runners on base, and came away with their first win of the summer. Missy Pivonka had two hits and Aly Gromak one to lead Tolland's hitters. Lindsey DuBosar went the distance, striking out eight. Christine Lemieux had 2 hits for South Windsor and Kathy Marulanda drove in a pair of runs.
Ellington 7, Bloomfield 3. Ellington bested visiting Bllomfield 7-3 in a well played, quick-paced game. Meagan Nelson was the starting pitcher, supported by the hitting of Karyn Deptula and Kerry Stoecker, who doubled. Mallory Householder again came up from U-14 to make a solid contribution as relief pitcher. Jessica Swetcky pitched well but took the loss for Bloomfield. Monica Rochon and Taylor Stewart each had base hits and an RBI.
Hebron 7, Vernon 2. The Express traveled to Vernon and returned with a 7-2 divisional win. Jill Mangan earned the victory, allowing three hits, and went 2 for 3 at the plate and scored two runs. Stephanie Smith and Kara Pinto also had 2 two hits each. Melissa Martin doubled and Brittany Christensen added a single. Sherri Gandini had two hits for Vernon. Beth Paterson pitched well in the loss and Erin Diette again led the defense.
Stafford 10, Bolton 6. Homestanding Stafford beat the Classics to improve their record to 4-2. Marcie Boldi got the win, striking out twelve. Lauren Gagnon paced the offense with 2 hits and 2 RBI. Michelle Syphers had a great game defensively. Bolton pitcher Samantha Morris (11 K) helped herself with two hits and Megan Miller went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Friday, July 12th
Simsbury 5, Windsor 4. (from July 10th) Jessica Morris had three hits and 2 RBI to lead Simsbury to a 5-4 divisional win over Windsor. Jessica Savino fanned eleven of the twelve batters she faced, pitching no-hit ball during her four innings of work. Amanda Cleveland, Kelly Overbye and Sarah Sayadoff helped spark Simsbury with two hits apiece. Windsor's Elizabeth Edwards struck out five batters and pitched seven strong innings. Alicia Wood singled, doubled and scored two runs for the Ravens. Meaghan Maloney played a strong game at third base and Andrea Varney made a number of fine defensive plays at second base.

Monday, July 15th
Hebron 6, Somers 0. (see photos) Jill Mangan pitched the fourth no-hitter of the summer, blanking Somers 6-0. The Express pitcher was on track, striking out ten and walking none. She also helped herself on offense, getting a hit and scoring two runs. Melissa Martin also scored twice. Allyssa Eisenberg crushed a double and Stephanie Brown played well at shortstop. The Titans' Ashley Mazzoli allowed only two Hebron hits, striking out five and also walking none.
Bolton 13, Ellington 10. The Classics won on the road, downing Ellington 13-10. Samantha Morris earned the win, fanning 13 in the process. Allison Czaja went 2 for 2 with a double. Samantha Janty was on base three times in three at bats and scored three runs. Erin Stoecker played an outstanding game at catcher for Ellington. Samantha Blanchard and Samantha Plachy had good games at the plate.
Tolland 4, West Hartford 1. Tolland evened their record at 2-2 while handing West Hartford their first loss. Becca Fuller pitched a one-hitter, striking out twelve. Dani Ostien went 3 for 3. Rachel Fain collected two hits and scored two runs. Larissa Jesanis was outstanding both behind the plate and at the plate with a hit and a run scored. Also adding one hit each for Tolland were Natalie Moore, Kacie Finance and Becca Fuller. West Hartford was led by the pitching of Abby Johnson and the defense of Maya Shoham, who twice robbed Tolland batters of extra-base hits with outstanding catches in center field. Liz Ross had West Hartford's only hit.
Vernon 5, Simsbury 1. Simsbury became the second team to get its first loss tonight, falling to Vernon 5-1. Mary Gordon pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight, to get the victory. Shannon Miller drove in two runs for Vernon with a base hit in the first inning. Leighann Caron's bunt in the sixth inning led to two more Vernon runs. Eliza Paterson played a strong defensive game and added a base hit at the plate. Jessica Savino and Kristina Gordon both pitched well for Simsbury, holding the Vernon offense to four hits. Natasha Fahey doubled and scored the lone Simsbury run. Karlie Welsh made some fine plays at shortstop for Simsbury.

Wednesday, July 17th
Simsbury 1, Hebron 0. Simsbury prevailed over the Express in this pitchers' duel by a score of 1-0. Jess Savino led the way, pitching the fifth no-hitter of the summer, striking out 18 batters and adding two hits at the plate. Amy Neureither's base hit drove in Amanda Cleveland with the only run of the game in the 4th inning. Karlie Welsh also had two hits for Simsbury. Jill Mangan pitched a fine game for Hebron, striking out seven. The Express was also solid in the field. Catcher Steph Houghton threw out two runners and shortstop Steph Brown made a number of fine plays.
Tolland 7, Somers 1. Tolland won their third straight game as Lindsey DuBosar and Becca Fuller combined for a one-hitter, each striking out six. The pitchers were also offensive standouts with two hits each. Rachel Fain made an outstanding defensive play when she went far to her right to field a ground ball and then dove to the bag to force the Somers runner. Other Tolland standouts were Dani Ostien (2 for 3 with a double), Aly Gromak (double) and Mhairi-Kate McKeegan with a hit and an excellant all-around game. Tiffany Doane had the lone Titans hit, driving in Melissa Vamvilis. Ashley Mazzoli pitched well but took the loss.
Bolton 22, Bloomfield 6. (see photos) Samantha Morris fanned 11 batters in four innings to earn the win and give Bolton sole possession of first place in the South Division. Jenna Anderson and Sarah Haight led the Classics' hitting attack. Catcher Monica Rochon turned in an outstanding game for Bloomfield. Jessica Swetcky pitched well and Sarah Federico played an all-around good game.
Stafford 10, Ellington 3. Stafford won at home, besting Ellington 10-3. Britney Church and Jessi Zeigler both tripled and Michelle Syphers led the defensive effort. Ashley Gioia pitched a good game for Ellington. Sam Blanchard's two doubles led the hitters and Allyson Pitney turned in a solid performance in the field.
West Hartford 13, South Windsor 3. Maya Shoham carried the West Hartford offense, going 4 for 5, with a homerun and 3 singles, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Kelly Mascolo pitched the complete game win, striking out five, and helped herself with two hits and two runs scored. Alix Raymond had a hit and also scored two runs. Steph Maura led South with an RBI-triple and a run scored. Breeanne Varley played a good game defensively.

Friday, July 19th
Tolland at Ellington, Bolton at Simsbury (MP), Stafford at Vernon.All games postponed due to rain.

Monday, July 22nd
Hebron 11, Bolton 2. The Express beat the Classics 11-2 behind very solid defense and starting pitcher Jill Mangan and reliever Danielle Dupont. Jill struck out six and helped herself by hitting a double. Steph Smith (2 hits), Kara Pinto (triple), Amanda Brown (double), Kristen VonHone (single) and Danielle Dupont (single) sparked the offense. Catcher Steph Houghton had two hits and played well defensively. The Classics' Samantha Morris (6K) pitched well but took the loss. Tegan Mahford singled twice and Allison Czaja also had a hit.
Somers 12, Ellington 8. The Titans downed Ellington 12-8 as Sarah Hills doubled twice among three hits to lead the attack. Lindsey Cunningham scored three runs and Tiffany Doane hit a double. Robin Tripp led the defense for Ellington. Kerry Stoecker had a base hit and Karissa Parker did some great bunting.
Windsor 18, West Hartford 8. Windsor won at home as Elizabeth Edwards pitched the win and also went 2 for 4 at the plate with two walks and four runs scored. Alicia Wood also had a good night at the plate, 3 for 4 with two walks and three runs scored. Theo Dworak had the hot bat for West Hartford, going a perfect 4 for 4 and scoring three runs. Michele Ribeiro had three hits in four at-bats and 3 RBIs.
Simsbury 5, Bloomfield 1. Sheila Capetta and Jessica Savino each pitched well in leading Simsbury to a 5-1 victory over Bloomfield. The two pitchers combined to strike out thirteen batters and hold the oppposition to one hit. Capetta also drove in two runs for Simsbury. Diane Rumbold had runs batted in during the first and sixth innings and played extremely well behind the plate. Liz Mikkelson reached base three times and scored two runs. Mikkelson and Kristina Gordon each made a number of fine plays in the infield for the winners. Bloomfield was led by Denise Harris, who singled in the run and played well defensively. Taylor Stewart also played a strong game and Sarah Federico made several exceptional plays at catcher. Federico was involved in two putouts at home, threw out a runner to complete a double play in the fifth inning, and picked off a baserunner in the sixth.
Stafford 11, Tolland 11. Suspended after 7 innings due to darkness; to be resumed at Stafford on Monday, August 5th.
South Windsor at Vernon. To be rescheduled to a later date.
Tuesday, July 23rd
South Windsor at Bloomfield. (from 7/15) Postponed due to rain, rescheduled to Tuesday, July 30th.
Wednesday, July 24th
South Windsor 8, Stafford 6. South Windsor beat Stafford 8-6 in an exciting game that saw the lead change hands 3 times. Nicole Nixon and Christine Lemieux combined for the victory. Christine pitched 3 innings of no-hit ball in relief, striking out 6. Bree Varley played excellant defense and had 2 hits. Danielle Usiadek added 3 RBIs. For Stafford, Brittney Church played great defense, while Amanda Syme and Marcie Boldi provided the offense.
Bloomfield 10, Tolland 7. Bloomfield recorded their first win with a 10-7 decision over visiting Tolland. Sarah Federico had the hot bat for the winners, going 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Taylor Stewart (3B) and winning pitcher Jessica Swetcky both had strong defensive games. Lindsey DuBosar and Missy Pivonka both pitched well in the loss for Tolland. Rachel Fain collected a pair of hits.

Friday, July 26th
Windsor 1, Hebron 0 (8 innings). Windsor emerged the victor in this scoreless contest, pushing across the only run on a passed ball in the bottom of the 8th inning. Elizabeth Edwards fanned three and walked none in pitching the complete game win. Alicia Wood played well at second base and Lauren Ziaks had a solid game behind the plate.
Monday, July 29th
Somers 4, Bolton 2. Ashley Mazzoli pitched a strong game as visiting Somers beat the Bolton Classics 4-2. Alert baserunning by Alysa Craig and Crista Maggio was instrumental in the win. Samantha Morris and Colleen Murphy led the Classics' hitters and Samantha Janty had a great game behind the plate.
South Windsor 8, Hebron 4. South Windsor went to Hebron and came home with an 8-4 divisional victory. Leading the offense for South was Stephanie Maura with a double and a single, Emilie Aries and Nicole Nixon with triples and Erin Coburn with two singles. Kathy Marulanda played flawless defense at shortstop with 7 assists. Leading the offense for Hebron was Melissa Martin with a double and a single and Amanda Brown with two singles. Brittany Christensen played well on defense for the Express.
Vernon 23, Bloomfield 0. Vernon also won on the road, blanking Bloomfield 23-0. Mary Gordon pitched a two-hitter to earn the win. Sherri Gandini provided plenty of offense with a double, single and 5 RBIs. Beth Paterson also had a double among two hits. Taylor Stewart tripled for Bloomfield. Julie Melanson pitched well and Sarah Federico played a good game behind the plate.
Simsbury 3, Ellington 2 (8 innings). Trailing 2-0 with two out in the seventh inning, Simsbury rallied to tie the score before going on to defeat Ellington in extra innings. With a runner on first base in the seventh inning, Karlie Welsh hit an inside-the-park homerun to tie the game. Natasha Fahey had two hits for Simsbury and also drove in the winning run with a ground ball in the eighth inning. Megan Neureither had two hits and played well defensively, throwing out two baserunners. Jess Savino pitched all eight innings for Simsbury, fanning 14 batters. Ellington was led by the strong pitching of Ashley Gioia and Megan Nelson, who held Simsbury scoreless for six innings and combined to strike out eight. Sam Blanchard made a number of fine plays at third base, had two hits, and drove in both of Ellington's runs.

Wednesday, July 31st
Hebron 17, Vernon 2. Hebron won their last home game, a 17-2, 5 inning decision over division opponent Vernon. Jill Mangan (4 IP/6K) earned the win and also drove in four runs at the plate. Steph Houghton had the big bat for the Express, collecting 3 RBI on a single and a 2-run homer. Kara Pinto also went 2 for 3. Brittany Christensen had a bunt single with an RBI. Steph Smith and Danielle Dupont each added hits. For Vernon, Melissa Rebai hit a double and Eliza Paterson and Erin Diette had good games on defense.
South Windsor 9, Bolton 2. South Windsor brought home another road victory, beating Bolton 9-2. Christine Lemieux (5K) pitched five strong innings with Nicole Nixon coming on in relief. Providing the offense for South was Emilie Aries with 3 hits, Nicole Nixon had two including a double, and Sarah Archambeault chipped in 2 hits. Nettie Marciano played strong defense. Sam Morris took the loss for the Classics. Allison Czaja and Tegan Mahford did well in the field.
Somers 21, Tolland 11. After spotting Tolland a six run lead in a shaky first inning, the Titans came back to win 21-11 at Somers. Alysa Craig scored four times for the Titans. Nancy Gilbert came up big on offense with a great bunt single and an RBI single. In the pitcher's circle, Ashley Mazzoli came on in very early relief to earn the win, striking out seven and walking none. Lauren Philippona scored twice for Tolland on a pair of hits. Kacie Finance singled and doubled and Emily Rabe had a nice single. Mhairi-Kate McKeegan ripped a triple in the sixth inning and Lindsey DuBosar did a good job pitching in relief.
Windsor 7, Bloomfield 1 (1st game). Elizabeth Edwards pitched a complete game win in the first game of the doubleheader, striking out five. Jackie Mendola went 2 for 2 and scored twice.
Windsor 9, Bloomfield 6 (2nd game). (from July 8th) In the nightcap, Mallory Mitchell and Caylee Johanson combined to pitch the 9-6 win for Windsor. Amanda Ziaks and Andrea Varney both went 2 for 3 at the plate. Bloomfield was led by Sarah Federico, Taylor Stewart and Jessica Swetcky.
Simsbury 2, West Hartford 0 (1st game). (from July 24th) Jess Savino fanned 11 batters over five innings as Simsbury defeated West Hartford 2-0. Sheila Capetta led the offense with two base hits and a run scored. Victoria Savino made a number of fine plays at second base for Simsbury. Abby Johnson pitched well for West Hartford, holding Simsbury to four hits. Both Heather Corrigan (1B) and Liz Ross (CF) played well defensively for West Hartford.
West Hartford 5, Simsbury 2 (2nd game). Back to back doubles by Michele Ribiero and Alix Raymond in the fourth inning sparked West Hartford to a 5-2 victory over Simsbury. Ribiero drove in two runs in the game and also played well behind the plate. Liz Ross had two hits and a run scored for West Hartford. Abby Johnson pitched five strong innings and was backed by the excellant defensive play of Kelly Mascolo. Sarah Sayadoff had two base hits and crossed the plate twice for Simsbury. Becca Raymond and Megan Neureither also had two hits apiece in the game.
Ellington 7, Stafford 0. Forfeited by Stafford.
Friday, August 2nd
Bolton at Windsor (6:30PM)(from June 28th), Somers at Simsbury (from June 26th). Postponed due to rain.
Monday, August 5th
South Windsor 17, Vernon 15. In a seesaw game, South Windsor edged visiting Vernon 17-15. Danielle Cowee was the winning pitcher. The hot bat of the night award goes to Sarah Archambeault with 4 hits including a double. Monica Hamilton added two hits including a triple, while Bree Varley added 2 hits, including a double. Jen Wallace made a great catch to seal the win. For Vernon, Kellie Nelson collected 3 hits, Melissa Rebai added two, including a double. Hannah Koch play great on defense.
Tolland 13, Stafford 12 (8 innings). (conclusion of tie game suspended by darkness on July 22nd) Becca Fuller got the win in extra innings for Tolland. She also singled at the plate. Natalie Moore doubled in the deciding run.
Tolland 17, Stafford 3. Becca Fuller pitched four innings to get the win, striking out five. Sam Morrow went 4 for 4 with two doubles and Dani Ostien went 3 for 3. Lindsay DuBosar came on in relief, striking out three Stafford hitters. Marcie Boldi (7K) took the loss for Stafford. Jessi Zeigler pitched well in relief. Tori Butler had a good game at third base and also had one of the Stafford hits.
Bolton 6, Hebron 5. Trailing Hebron 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bolton Classics rallied for three runs to pull out the win. Samantha Morris pitched the complete game, limiting the Express to just five hits, with 14 strikeouts. Halley Robinson and Molly Murphy made outstanding catches in the outfield. For Hebron, Danielle Dupont and Jill Mangan combined to strike out 10 and allow only four hits. Steph Brown was 2 for 3 with a triple.
Simsbury 12, Bloomfield 2. Kristina Gordon and Jess Savino combined to strike out ten and give up six hits as Simsbury won in Bloomfield. Natasha Fahey led Simsbury with three hits and three runs scored. Gordon, Savino, Megan Neureither and Karlie Welsh had two hits apiece to help spark big innings for Simsbury. Fahey and Neureither also each made a number of strong defensive plays during the victory. Monica Rochon had an excellant game behind the plate and also had a double and a single for Bloomfield. Julie Melanson had an RBI single and Allison Balconoff played superbly in right field. Jessica Swetcky held the Simsbury offense to just two runs in her last 5 innings of work.
West Hartford 13, Windsor 2. West Hartford won at home as Abby Johnson pitched a no-hitter through five innings, striking out nine. Alix Raymond went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Heather Corrigan was 2 for 2 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Catcher Michele Ribiero caught a runner stealing, picked off another runner and did not allow any passed balls. Alicia Wood went 1 for 2 with a stolen base and a run scored for Windsor.
Ellington 9, Somers 3. Ellington won this divisional game behind Karissa Parker, Meagan Nelson and Karyn Deptula. Ashley Mazzoli pitched well for Somers. Crista Maggio led the defense and Mary McKinnon did well at the plate for the Titans in the loss.
Tuesday, August 6th
Bolton 6, Vernon 5. (from July 12th) In a seesaw battle that had five lead changes, the Bolton Classics eked out a victory in the bottom of the last inning. Molly Murphy knocked in the winning run, scoring Ryanne Niederwerfer. Megan Miller was 2 for 3 and contributed a key hit in the last inning. Vernon's Rachel Laster homered and doubled to lead the hitters. Shannon Miller turned in a sparkling double play and Julie Molina also had a hit.
Somers 8, South Windsor 3. (from July 19th).
Wednesday, August 7th
West Hartford 14, Bloomfield 1 (1st game). (from July 19th) West Hartford won the first game of the doubleheader as Abby Johnson (6K) allowed only two hits and one run. She also helped herself at the plate with a 3-run homer. Theo Dworak was 2 for 2 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Michele Ribeiro was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Julie Melanson took the loss for Bloomfield, striking out four. Monique Rochon played solidly at shortstop. Denise Harris had Bloomfield's only two hits.
West Hartford 8, Bloomfield 0 (2nd game). West Hartford swept the twinbill with Heather Corrigan pitching the 4-hit shutout in the nightcap. Theo Dworak went 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored. Sheri Brick was 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Michele Ribeiro doubled and scored a run. Abby Johnson made a basket catch at her shoelaces to save two runs and end the game. Jessica Swetcky took the loss for Bloomfield, striking out three. Juiie Melanson was 3 for 3 at the plate.
Tolland 11, Ellington 5. Becca Fuller pitched the division victory, yielding only one hit and fanning 10 in six innings. Lindsey DuBosar came on in relief to pitch the seventh. Leading the offense for Tolland was Samantha Morrow with two hits, including a triple. Dani Ostien, Larissa Jesanis and Kacie Finance each had one hit. Starter Ashley Gioia pitched well in the loss and had relief help from Meagan Nelson. Gioia, Stephanie Wrona, Sam Blanchard and Sam Plachy all had hits on offense.
Bolton 8, Vernon 0. Bolton won on the road as Samantha Morris pitched the 3-hit shutout. Jenna Anderson went 3 for 3, including a triple and double. Colleen Murphy was 2 for 4 with a double. Vernon was led by Rachel Laster, Eliza Paterson and Mary Gordon.
Stafford 9, Somers 1. Marcie Boldi struck out 14 as Stafford won their home finale. Jessi Zeigler and Stacey Beebe each hit triples to lead the offense. Somers' Mary McKinnon and Rachel Clark both had base hits. Alysa Craig also had a good overall game for the Titans.
Simsbury 7, Windsor 3. Jessica Savino struck out 11 of the 12 batters she faced as Simsbury won in Windsor. The victory clinched first place in the West Division for Simsbury and also gave the team the best overall regular season record. Kristina Gordon sparked the winners with a base hit and two runs batted in. Natasha Fahey capped a 5-run outburst in the seventh inning with a single that drove in two runs. Elizabeth Edwards pitched a strong game for Windsor, yielding just two hits over six innings of work. Lauren Ziaks played a fine game, giving Windsor the lead in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-double. Alicia Wood played well at shortstop and also drove in a run with a base hit. Christina Plant made a number of fine defensive plays for Windsor.
